La intención era poder añadir conocimiento sobre un área tan específica como es la lectura hipertextual que junta campos distintos como la psicología cognitiva, la semiótica, la comunicación audiovisual, la teoría del hipertexto, entre otros y, que de manera transversal, están presentes en este trabajo cuyo eje central de estudio es la educación. Esta última es el área en la que se ha centrado la investigación teniendo en cuenta especialmente la alfabetización mediática.  En la era digital el texto está viviendo múltiples transformaciones que abarcan diferentes campos desde el cognitivo, creativo, al estructural y cada uno de ellos provoca en el proceso lector mutaciones tanto de tiempo y espacio como de participación y responsabilidad. La relación biunívoca entre la escritura y la lectura deviene en el ciberespacio, aún más fundamental porque los roles de escritora y lectora se difuminan y pierden las características del pasado que asociaban más pasividad a este último y más poder al primero. En la tesis se describen los procesos de construcción entre las regulaciones de derecho de autor y derecho de copia y las tecnologías digitales orientadas a la gestión de estos derechos. Para ello, se analizan tres casos que evidencian las tensiones entre la apropiación y la liberación de bienes intelectuales y muestran estos procesos de co¬construcción. El primer caso de análisis es un artefacto anticopia diseñado por la corporación comercial Sony¬BMGMusicEntertainment. El segundo es el sistema de licencias abiertas de reserva selectiva de derechos de autor y derechos de copia de CreativeCommonsCorporation. El tercero es el sistema de gestión de obras intelectuales del mundo virtual llamado SecondLife. Las nuevas formas regulativas vinculadas al diseño de las tecnologías definen el futuro político, cultural, social y económico de las sociedades. La tesis tiene por finalidad alentar y fortalecer estas discusiones jurídico ¬políticas y tecnológicas a escala regional y global.
