Este hecho indica el reconocimiento de la importancia de la disciplina para el desarrollo social y tecnológico del país y constituye un punto de partida para lograr un mayor desenvolvimiento y potenciación del área, en particular en lo que se refiere a la creación de instrumentos que favorezcan la transferencia de conocimientos matemáticos a otras ciencias y a los sectores industrial, tecnológico y financiero. Existen algunos estudios bibliométricos previos sobre las Matemáticas en España que analizan la situación de la investigación en determinadas comunidades autónomas (Cufí et al. 2004) o en el total del país (Andradas y Zuazua, 2001). El estudio de Andradas y Zuazua, elaborado por iniciativa del Comité Español para el Año Mundial de las Matemáticas (CEAMM2000), analizaba la producción de los investigadores españoles en la base de datos Mathsci durante el período 1990-1999. El estudio actual se centra en las bases de datos de Thomson ISI, y complementa la información temática sobre el contenido de los documentos mediante los códigos MSC asignados por la base de datos Mathsci a cada publicación. De esta forma, se cuenta con los aspectos más ventajosos del uso de cada una de estas bases de datos: rigurosa selección de revistas por criterios de calidad e indicadores basados en citas de ISI, y descripción temática muy especializada extraída de Mathsci.
