El problema de la clasificación del saber y el conocimiento científico surgió por la necesidad del hombre de sistematizar todos los conocimientos sobre el mundo exterior y sobre el proceso de conocimiento. A este respecto, el estudioso de renombre de la clasificación de las ciencias Kedrov define a ésta como «la unificación de todos los conocimientos en un sistema único, en el cual se reflejan la lógica del objeto de estudio y las concepciones generales sobre el mundo y su conocimiento por el hombre»2 El concepto mismo de organización del conocimiento lleva implícitos unos límites propios de una teoría general de la clasificación del conocimiento. Ello se debe, en gran medida, a la imposibilidad espacio-temporal de una clasificación de carácter general del conocimiento, ya que éste no ha alcanzado el grado universal, desde un punto de vista teórico, y está impregnada de un carácter caduco intrínseco a la misma. El determinismo en las propias estructuras de la clasificación hace, al mismo tiempo, que las propias clasificaciones respondan a parámetros y estructuras sociales determinados, más que a una concepción teórica.
