Por supuesto que no resulta sencillo que la mente levante el vuelo para lograr un conocimiento integral de aquello que busca conocer. Pero esto que pudiera entenderse como una cierta normalidad en los individuos particulares cuando pretenden conocer el cotidiano entorno en el que están inmersos, se torna ciertamente preocupante dentro de una actividad sistemática y programática de conocimiento como la que se lleva a cabo dentro de una disciplina cognoscitiva. Lo que por otra parte, habla del nivel de avance en cuanto a la fundamentación de tal disciplina. Un ejemplo de esto lo representa la Bibliotecología en la cual una orientación cognoscitiva anclada en el conocimiento inmediato, particular y específico de los objetos que estudia suele ser aún determinante. Esto se denota con especial agudeza cuando trata con aquellos objetos que le son sustancialmente propios, pero que tienen una marcada consistencia técnica; como es el emblemático caso de la bibliografía. La subrayada orientación técnica que encauza al campo bibliotecológico en su conjunto tiende a resaltar la dimensión técnica de la bibliografía, con lo que se encubren los demás aspectos que también forman parte de ella. El estudio de la bibliografía queda así focalizado en su particularidad específica técnica, con lo que queda acentuado su aspecto operativo y práctico, dejándose de lado su entramado con una integridad más amplia de procesos y acontecimientos de diversos órdenes. Ante semejante obturación del enfoque cognoscitivo resulta un auténtico bálsamo el libro La bibliografía. Historia de una tradición, escrito por el bibliógrafo italiano Luigi Balsamo. Libro que con fina sensibilidad articula el desenvolvimiento histórico semántico del concepto de bibliografía con los procesos socioculturales. Los artículos sobre temas científicos o técnicos, por ejemplo, se suelen publicar antes en Internet que en papel, o se publican únicamente en la red. A esto hay que añadir la proliferación de una serie de nuevos desarrolladores de software, controladores de comunicaciones y redes que ofrecen recursos de todo tipo. Los recursos de información están hoy, pues, estrechamente ligados con la computación, los medios electrónicos, las redes de comunicación, los sistemas administrativos y académicos en red, y datos de todo tipo. La potencialidad del hipertexto ha desplazado al libro impreso en papel, como soporte de la información. Sin embargo, el adjetivo bibliográfico añadido a la descripción se sigue utilizando como una forma de oposición a la descripción del contenido, puesto que la descripción bibliográfica se refiere únicamente a la forma, al envoltorio del contenido intelectual y a los aspectos externos del documento.
