Debido a su legitimización como campo y a la disponibilida de la bibliografía en esta área, se eligió el campo de bibliometría para probar la aplicabilidad de la ley de lotka. Los datos fueron extraídos de Bibliography of bibliometrics and citation indecing and analysis, obra que fue elaborada y publicada por Hjerppe en 1980. Esta bibliografía cubre un periodo de 80 años, lo sufientemente largo como para esperar que la productividad del autor sea la frecuencia de distribución que Lotka observó. Se adoptó el conteo directo y por lo tanto sólo los autores principales fueron acreditados con la producción de un artículo. De los 2032 artículos identificados se eliminaron 41 porque fueron producidos por cuerpos corporativos o bien por autores anónimos, o porque las citas eran incorrectas. Este proceso de limplieza produjo una población final de 1991 artículos producidos por 1124 autores. Al nivel de significancia de 0.01, se encontró que el valor crítico era de 0.048706 y el Dmax de 0.42272; por lo tanto, esta literatura si se conformó de acuerdo con la ley de Lotka.
