Desde la perspectiva de la creciente sígnificatividad que adquiere el conocimiento en todos los ordenes de la sociedad, es posible comprender el crecimiento exponencial que alcanzan los desarrollos tecnológicos del mundo moderno y que hoy nos proporcionan acceso inmediato a la información de sucesos acaecidos en los más apartados lugares del mundo, nos permiten interactuar en tiempo real con personas distantes miles de kilómetros. Lo anterior ha impuesto la concepción del mundo como una aldea global y en reacción a ello las continuas reivindicaciones de la singularidad cultural de los pueblos. Esta importancia que tiene el conocimiento nos lleva a entender, acorde con los planteamientos de Malraux1, que nuestra sociedad ha sufrido una gran transformación. Hoy se habla por ejemplo de una economía del conocimiento, significando con ello que los conceptos explicativos tradicionales de la economía misma se han modificado: los llamados hechos económicos asociados a la producción, el consumo y el intercambio quedan circunscritos tanto a la creación de conocimiento como a la preferencia, a la utilidad del nuevo conocimiento y a la imperfección misma de ese mercado del conocimiento. Las cantidades económicas tradicionalmente preocupadas por la medida de aquellas que están sujetas al intercambio, consumo y producción se enfocan en la actualidad en la medida de los activos intangibles. En ese mismo sentido se puede afirmar que las organizaciones, no sólo las de tipo empresarial, dejan de centrarse en la experticia manual de las personas para enfocarse en la creatividad y en la optimización de las posibilidades intelectuales de su talento humano. Contribuye a lo anterior el hecho de que la tecnología tiende a desarrollarse hasta tal punto que las destrezas necesarias para trabajar con ella ya no van a ser necesarias.
