En el presente ensayo se hace un recorrido histórico acerca de cómo ha sido la evolución en el uso de las plantas, específicamente, de las medicinales. Desde su aparición, el hombre ha tenido la necesidad de prevenir enfermedades y ha visto cómo la naturaleza puede ser su aliada para combatirlas, pero igual esa necesidad no sólo se refiere al hecho de conocerlas, sino también de saberlas utilizar para su propio beneficio. En principio ese conocimiento fue intuitivo e instintivo y luego con el pasar de los años por la inteligencia. De ahí que el poder curativo de las plantas tuvieran, en principio, una connotación inmensamente mágica, para convertirse en un conocimiento empírico que fue trasmitido de padres a hijos a través de generaciones, lo que quiere decir que el uso de las plantas medicinales pasó de ser una medicina popular del pasado, primero, a una medicina científica clásica después y, finalmente, una medicina científica verdadera.
