El presente estudio evaluó el efecto repelente de aceites esenciales extraídos de 8 especies de plantas contra las picaduras de Lutzomyia migonei, el vector de Leishmania. Los aceites esenciales se extraen por destilación de vapor en la cámara Clevenger, de las siguientes plantas: suaveolens Hyptis, racemosa Pimenta, Piper marginatum, monticalia imbricatifolia, Pseudognaphalium caeruleocanum, Espeletia shultzii, Plecthranthus amboinicus y Cinnamomun zeylanicum. Pruebas de repelencia se realizaron en condiciones de laboratorio por el método de la mano del hombre en los ensayos de la jaula, con colonias femeninos de L. migonei. Los aceites más eficaces fueron probados en concentraciones variables en diferentes voluntarios. Se calcularon el porcentaje y tiempo de protección. Los resultados mostraron que los aceites de P. caeruleocanum y C. zeylanicum eran los más eficaces. Aunque P. amboinicus aceite también tenían efecto repelente mostró un efecto irritante. Los aceites P. marginatum, H. suaveolens y P. racemosa no mostraron ningún efecto repelente, mientras que el resto de extractos de aceite mostró repelencia significativa en grados variables. P. caeruleocanum y aceites C. zeylanicum siempre la protección del 95% contra las picaduras de L. migonei de 3h. El aceite de P. caeruleocanum mostró el mayor tiempo de protección, con una media de más de 4 horas y 3 horas a concentraciones de 50% y 10% respectivamente.
