En este artículo realizamos un seguimiento histórico de los principales usos del concepto y analizamos su influencia en el desarrollo de los distintos enfoques en la disciplina. Las primeras nociones fueron formuladas en el siglo pasado por naturalistas precursores de la ecología, como Darwin, Möbius y Forbes. A comienzos de este siglo y hasta la década del 30, el concepto estuvo relacionado implícitamente con la idea de balance de la naturaleza. en particular en los trabajos de Shelford, Clements y Adams. Hutchinson y MacArthur hicieron nuevos aportes en los años 40 y 50, y durante los 60 y 70 el concepto fue incorporado en los principales cuerpos teóricos desarrollados en esa época, destacando los aportes de Lewontin, y los de Sutherland, Connell y Peterson en los 80. Gran parte de las controversias generadas desde los ochenta hasta hoy se refieren a la existencia o no de equilibrio en la naturaleza, y a las escalas de tiempo y espacio relevantes para detectarlo. Actualmente podemos reconocer que la problemática de equilibrio v/s no-equilibrio en ecología de comunidades se ha abordado desde dos enfoques distintos. Primero, a través del estudio de las dinámicas temporales, analizando la existencia o no existencia de estados de equilibrio asociados a características como estabilidad, persistencia y elasticidad de los sistemas. Segundo, en el estudio de la naturaleza de los factores involucrados en la regulación de la dinámica de estos sistemas, donde se asocia la noción de equilibrio con la preponderancia de interacciones bióticas, y la de no-equilibrio con la de perturbaciones abióticas. En este comentario discutimos las consecuencias que han tenido estos enfoques en el desarrollo de la teoría ecológica moderna. y en particular en ecología de comunidades.
