En este estudio se procesaron 144 muestras de orina que se remitieron a la Sección de Bacteriología del Laboratorio Clínico del Hospital Universitario del Valle (HUV), para ser sometidas a cultivo. Cada una de las muestras se cultivó por los métodos de siembra de Kass y tradicional de \"cuatro estrías\" evaluados en este estudio y por el método de dispersión con asa de vidrio, que se utilizó como método de referencia o estándar de oro. Se evaluaron estos dos métodos en particular, porque son los más utilizados en los laboratorios clínicos de rutina de Cali y se han adoptado empíricamente. Para el método de Kass se determinó una sensibilidad de 40%, una especificidad de 87%, un valor predictivo positivo de 73% y un valor predictivo negativo de 62%. En el método tradicional de cuatro estrías la sensibilidad fue de 48%, la especificidad de 84%, el valor predictivo positivo de 73% y el valor predictivo negativo de 65%. Por los resultados obtenidos, se demostró que las técnicas evaluadas no son recomendables para uso de rutina en el laboratorio clínico porque podría favorecer la no aplicación de un tratamiento oportuno a un paciente o producir un gasto innecesario de insumos y tiempo en el laboratorio.
