El diccionario posee un talante enciclopédico, presenta autores protagónicos de la educación, conceptos o tópicos, instituciones y temas ordenados de modo alfabético; esta amplitud está proyectada para superar los mínimos definitorios o conceptuales de los diccionarios clásicos; en efecto, los autores proponen artículos e interpretaciones que desbordan la delimitación conceptual, presentando así reflexiones, hipótesis y tesis, a partir de experiencias e investigaciones; anteponiéndose a la crítica sobre el carácter de este diccionario (sobre sus excesos o limitaciones) los autores, deliberadamente, optaron por este formato para generar más debate y cuestionar las ideas educativas latentes en ciertas corrientes o discursos. Se pretende, además, que el diccionario sea una fuente importante para el quehacer investigativo y para enriquecer el acervo cultural docente; la formación docente actual adolece grandes limitaciones –reflejadas en los resultados de pruebas estandarizadas y en los logros de aprendizaje de sus alumnos-, y en gran medida, estos vacíos están asociados a un nuevo estilo de formación –más universitario, y menos normalista- que afectó la mística de la profesión y desvalorizó socialmente sus status quo, ocasionando así una generación magisterial más débil, académicamente hablando.
