El listado de encabezamientos de materia de música surgió, en un principio, como una mera puesta en común de los problemas suscitados en el trabajo diario de los profesionales de la documentación musical. Como todo proyecto colectivo que se prolonga a lo largo de los años, la metodología de trabajo ha sido muy flexible para dar cabida a los problemas que han ido surgiendo durante su traducción: desde cambios en la autoridad de las materias de alguna categoría determinada, nuevas normativas y adaptaciones de las reglas de catalogación, disparidad de criterios de traducción... Como punto de partida se tomó el Library of Congress Authorities, y se han consultado obras de referencia habituales en la documentación musical (diccionarios, glosarios, enciclopedias, etc.), revisado la lista de encabezamientos de materias de la Biblioteca Nacional de España (BNE) o el de la de la Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Rameau).
