Las unidades de información deben llevar a cabo el control de autoridades, ya que si se cuenta con una herramienta de esta índole, rápidamente se encuentra el término normalizado tanto para nombres personales y de organismos, como para títulos uniformes, series y encabezamientos de materia. Al respecto, el control de autoridades para el caso de los encabezamientos de materia, nos evita en primer lugar la duplicidad de conceptos, es decir la sinonimia y, por otra parte, nos permite elegir conceptos más específicos o más genéricos que nos lleven a representar plenamente el contenido del material documental.
