El primer santuario fue edificado a mediados del siglo xvi, pero sufrió deterioros en el año de 1565 a causa de un fuerte sismo. La iglesia actual fue construida en 1702 por Diego de Porres y fue destruida por los terremotos de 1717, 1751 y 1773.
