Se basa en el sistema desarrollado a finales del siglo XIX por Victor Mahillon, el cual propone una división de los instrumentos musicales de acuerdo con el material o parte del instrumento que produce el sonido. La clasificación de Hornbostel y Sachs supera la de Mahillon incluyendo todos los objetos sonoros utilizados en el mundo. Se estructura según modelo decimal con cuatro niveles superiores —idiófonos, membranófonos, cordófonos y aerófonos—, sobre el cual se ha desarrollado a lo largo del siglo XX una verdadera ciencia de los instrumentos musicales: la organología. En su evolución han intervenido famosos musicólogos, como Anthony Baines y Jeremy Montagu. El primero de los dos junto con Klaus P.
