La esterilización puede ser preparativa, en la que los materiales y medios a utilizar en el laboratorio o durante distintos procesos microbiológicos deben ser esterilizados antes del mismo trabajo. Pero también es necesaria la esterilización antes de desechar el material ya utilizado y contaminado en el laboratorio, en cuyo caso se habla de esterilización final. En este documento se describen las técnicas de esterilización más habitualmente utilizadas en un laboratorio de microbiología general y de metodologías de control de la esterilización.
