La utilización de la norma ISAD(G) se ha generalizado en estas tareas. Sin embargo, la organización de la Archivalía (el Archivo como conjunto de fondos y colecciones), y su posterior descripción conjunta tropiezan con ciertas dificultades, pues las agrupaciones utilizadas tradicionalmente, llámense secciones, grupos de fondos o similares, no responden, muy a menudo, al principio de procedencia, y su descripción en las guías deja fuera elementos que están mejor recogidos en la ISAD(G).
